What is 50 Beowulf?
The 50 Beowulf upper is a proprietary caliber that was developed as a special cartridge. Alexander Arms and Delta Firearms oversee all aspects of the system’s production and related accessories. Some authors were irritated by their reluctance to release information. Since Alexander Arms has a brand under the name .50 Beowulf, several other companies produce weapons and ammunition and that replicates in the exact dimensions under the 12.7 x 42mm name.
What is 50 Beowulf Upper?
The design of .50 Beowulf was to produce devastating stopping power over short to medium distances. Combining the rugged reliability of AR-15 / M16 style weapons with a unique .500-inch round and round, this semi-automatic weapon is ideal as a hunting weapon. It can take down virtually anything you come across.
When hunting wild boar, the rifle is second to none. And the use of it is by hunters and hunting control authorities. The hunting of deer in close cover are easy with solid hits that guarantee a single shot kill with little to no tracking. The same reliable combination of large diameter heavy bullets and moderate speeds allows the Beowulf 50 top to take on the largest wildlife in North America and the use of it has been against elk, buffalo, and bear with excellent results.
Design and Specifications
The cartridge uses a recessed edge the size of the 6.5mm Grendel round edge. Although the shell body dimensions are very similar to the .500 S&W Magnum revolver cartridge, it is slightly longer and fully tapered for automatic weapon advancement. The projectile is intended to significantly improve stopping force at short to medium ranges compared to the standard NATO 5.56 × 45mm projectile. One of the advertised uses is at vehicle checkpoints. Because, the trajectory of the heavy shot is not easily deflected by the automotive glass or standard body panels.
50 Beowulf design limitations
With normal bullet weights stuck between 300 and 400 grains (19 and 26 g), the overall length of the cartridge is shorter than that of an AR-15 magazine. And the AR bolt resistance system restricts a pressure of 33,000 psi. The best description of 50 Beowulf upper is as a heavy caliber, low velocity, with ballistics roughly the same as early government .45-70 bullets, rather than the higher pressure bullets tolerated by lever-action rifles like the Marlin Model 1895.
The Use of 50 Beowulf Upper
Sports Use
Though much has been written about its tactical use, the 50 Beowulf upper is gaining recognition as a sports cartridge. In addition, it is recognizes that the use of it is on a wide variety of North American wildlife. Also, including deer, elk, and black bears.
Price
The prices of both the 50 Beowulf upper and the rifles are reasonable. I mean backtracking. It is only slightly more than the cousin .223. While the retracement felt depends on many factors, such as the frequency of the recoil pulse and the time curve. And, one way to objectively compare the recoil is to look at the raw recoil energy numbers.
Similar Cartridges
The cartridge has its ancestors in the .50 Action Express, beginning with the LAR Grizzly and, more recently, the Magnum Research Desert Eagle pistol, with significant modifications to improve the functionality and safety of the AR-15 rifle.
